World Para Powerlifting is deeply saddened by the passing of Lt. Cdr. Kamaruzaman Kadir, Chairperson of the World Para Powerlifting Sport Technical Committee (STC) and President of the Malaysian Para Powerlifting Association, at the age of 72.

A Technical Delegate (TD) and International Technical Official (ITO) for over 20 years, Kadir took part in almost all major Para powerlifting events in this century from the Paralympic Games to World Championships and regional events such as the Commonwealth Games.

A retired Naval Officer who served his country from 1970 to 1996, Kadir was also among the founding members of the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) Para Games and was directly involved in the first Asian Para Games supporting the National Paralympic Committee (NPC) of Malaysia.

“It will be difficult for us to imagine a World Para Powerlifting event without Lt. Cdr. Kamaruzaman Kadir, such was his contribution to the development and success of our sport. On behalf of the entire Para powerlifting family, I would like to convey our heartfelt condolences to his family and friends, and also to the Para powerlifting community in Malaysia,” Jorge Moreno, Head of World Para Powerlifting, said.

As a tribute to Kamaruzaman Kadir, World Para Powerlifting observed a minute of silence before the start of every medal event at the Dubai 2024 World Cup taking place in the United Arab Emirates this week and also a minute of applauses during the closing ceremony on Wednesday (6 March).
