“The athletes headed to London have proven through their performances that they are able to compete with the best in the world on a consistent basis.”

Athletics Canada on Tuesday (3 July) announced the athletes that have been put forth to the Canadian Paralympic Committee for nomination to the London 2012 Paralympic Games team.

Michelle Stillwell and Josh Cassidy highlight the squad as returning Paralympic veterans.

Stilwell won gold in the 100m and 200m T52 distances at the Beijing 2008 Games and is the reigning world champion in both of those events, as well as the 400m T52 race. She holds the world record in all three distances.

Cassidy is on a roll this year already after setting a new course record at the Boston Marathon in April. He competed at Beijing 2008 in three distances but did not medal.

The two will be joined on the team by 24 more of Canada’s top Paralympic athletes.

“The athletes headed to London have proven through their performances that they are able to compete with the best in the world on a consistent basis,” Athletics Paralympic Games head coach Laurier Primeau said.

“We will move forward into our final preparation phase with high expectations. Athletes and staff have a singular focus now, to elicit the best result of the year at the most important competition of their lives."

In Athletics at the Beijing 2008 Games, Canada took home 19 medals, including 10 golds, one silver and eight bronze.
