“I expect the veterans to make the podium while the goal for the 'rookies' will be to gain international experience and improve their personal best."

The Italian Federation of Paralympic and Experimental Sports have announced the team that will participate at the Swansea 2014 IPC Athletics European Championships to be held from 18 until 23 August.

The team includes 13 athletes (8 men and 5 women) plus a guide and star names include Assunta Legnante and Martina Caironi, the women’s Paralympic and world champions at shot put F11 and 100m T42 respectively.

They are joined by 100m T35 world and defending European champion Oxana Corso and Paralympic multi-medallist T51 wheelchair racer Alvise De Vidi.

Six emerging talents who will make their international debuts in Swansea are also named having performed strongly at recent national events.

Italy's coach Mario Poletti said: "The team selection has been made in view of the upcoming major events like the World Championships in Doha next year and the European Championships on our home soil in Grosseto in 2016 followed by the Rio Paralympic Games.
