Australia’s Michael Roeger has been voted the Allianz Athlete of the Month for April after his stunning debut win at the London Marathon.

It was a first world gold for the 30-year-old in London, who smashed the men’s T46 world record in only his second marathon, having made his first appearance over the 26.2-mile distance in Melbourne last October.

Roeger received 39 per cent of the public votes. British swimmer Maisie Summers-Newton came in second with 24 per cent, while Australian triathlete Kate Doughty was not far behind in 23 per cent. Indian badminton player Krishna Nagar (7 per cent) and Swiss wheelchair racer Manuela Schaer (6 per cent) were also nominated.

February – Yujie Li, CHN, taekwondo

March – Lisa Bunschoten, NED, snowboard

April – Michael Roeger, AUS, athletics
