Tokyo 2020 Olympic and Paralympic Parks to be transformed into Games legacy

The symbolic areas of the Tokyo 2020 Games will be renamed "Olympic and Paralympic Parks," the Tokyo Metropolitan Government announced on Thursday, 21 July.

Exhibits will also be installed. These include "Site of the Games” plaques, Games symbols, the Olympic and Paralympic Cauldron and Olympic Truce and Paralympic Murals commemorating the Games.

The facilities and park that served as competition venues during the Tokyo 2020 Olympic and Paralympic Games will be considered as a combined area, with the name "Olympic and Paralympic Park" given to the two areas that are symbolic of the Games as a legacy.

These are the Ariake Olympic and Paralympic Park, which is made up of the Ariake Seaside Park, Ariake Urban Sports Park, Ariake Arena and Ariake Gymnastics Centre, as well as the Musashino Forest Olympic and Paralympic Park, which includes Musashinonomori Park, Musashino Forest Sport Plaza and Tokyo Stadium.

Legacy plaques

Plaques commemorating the Games and their legacy through inspiring stories will also be installed at the venues of the Tokyo 2020 Games. These include both competition and non-competition venues.

Additional plaques will be installed by municipalities on the bicycle road and Paralympic marathon course and other locations related to the Games, such as the torch relay route, training venues, and pre-Games training camps.

Games symbols

Of the seven Olympic and Paralympic symbols installed during the Games, three will be reinstalled on the waterfront and Mt. Takao areas. All 13 giant Games mascots will also remain in the locations where they were installed during the Games.

During the Tokyo 2020 Games, the Games-time cauldron was installed on the Ariake side of the Yume-no-Ohashi Bridge in the Tokyo waterfront area. In October 2022, the cauldron will be reinstalled in Symbol Promenade Park and the Tokyo Metropolitan Government will maintain it as a precious legacy of the Games and use it to enliven the waterfront area.

The Paralympic Mural and the Olympic Truce Mural, which were installed in the Olympic and Paralympic Village during the Games, will be installed in the Tokyo Metropolitan facilities as a legacy of the Games to convey a message of peace and harmony.

A Paralympic Mural is a monument that athletes and others could sign with their hopes for the promotion of the rights of people with disabilities and the creation of a sustainable and harmonious society. An Olympic Truce Mural is a monument that athletes and others signed with wishes for peace.
