Egyptian Para powerlifter Sherif Osman has been re-elected as the World Para Powerlifting Athlete Liaison. The announcement was made on Monday (6 December), closing day of the Tbilisi 2021 World Championships in Georgia.

The three-time Paralympic champion received 53 per cent of the votes, followed by Hungary’s Sedric Watchou Kouokam with 32 per cent. The other two candidates were Great Britain’s Ali Jawad (10 per cent) and Iran’s Roohallah Rostami (5).

Osman will serve a four-year term (2022-2025) acting as liaison between the athletes and the World Para Powerlifting Management Team, representing the views, interests and rights of the athletes and making their voice heard.

Osman had been voted Athlete Liaison in the first election which took place at the Mexico City 2017 World Championships. All athletes registered at the Tbilisi 2021 Worlds had the right to vote.

On his re-election, Osman said:

“I would like to thank you to all the Para powerlifting community, especially the athletes. I will defend your rights very strongly. The sport changed my life completely and I will try a lot to continue improving it all the time.”

The 39-year-old competed in the men’s up to 59kg in Georgia and took his fifth consecutive world title.
