Milano Cortina 2026: Top moments from Day 6
Aigner, Aarsjoe and Forster continue medal streaks in Para alpine giant slalom Republic of Korea and Sweden complete wheelchair curling mixed team semifinal lineup Germany record first Paralympics ice hockey win since Torino 2026 12 Mar 2026
We bring you the triumphs, the upsets and the top stories from the snow and ice at the Milano Cortina 2026 Paralympic Winter Games. Here are our top moments from Day 6 (12 March).
Rock n' roll spectacular
The female skiers showed off their giant slalom prowess at the Tofane Alpine Skiing Centre, with the men taking their turn tomorrow.
Veronika Aigner of Austria became a triple gold medalist in the vision impaired category, taking her fourth medal, but it was Italy’s silver medallist Chiara Mazzel who really got the party started.
Her guide Fabrizio Casal wore a music box on his back that blasted rock music for Mazzel to follow.
Casal said the music helped guide Mazzel safely down the slope.
“It needs to be rock. It needs to be very rhythmic, so she can kind of understand more where I'm going, every turn. She can use the hearing abilities that she has," Casel told reporters.
Austria’s Elina Stary rounded out the podium in the VI category.
Sweden’s Ebba Aarsjoe took her fourth Para alpine skiing medal and third gold in the standing category, while Anna-Lena Forster clinched her third medal and second gold in the sitting event.
Nails bitten to quick in semifinal quest
The last semifinal spot in wheelchair curling mixed team went to Republic of Korea after they inched ahead at the death of the last round robin session of the Games. With the Koreans and Italy locked on four wins each, the victor would take all.
The match on sheet C was the last still being played, with the scoring rocking between both teams, and the fourth end a blank. After seven ends, it was 5-5, but the Koreans prevailed in the eighth to take the match 6-5.
"I thought today would be a bit easier to manage, but we were too nervous and Italy played so well that it ended up being a really tough match for us,” Korean skip Hyeon Chul Lee said.
"We went into the match with real confidence, but there were some hiccups in the middle, so it ended up being a tough match."
With China and Canada already qualified for the semifinals, Sweden completed the last four, despite losing 12-3 to China, thanks to their strong start to the tournament. Canada, who have won a curling medal at every Winter Games, finished the round robin unbeaten.
Germany clinch first win since Torino 2026
The Para ice hockey classification-match action was a tale of two games. Germany won a seesawing encounter against Slovakia 4-3 in overtime, while Italy polished off Japan 5-0.
The two victors will play for fifth spot on Saturday 14 March, the day after the semifinals, while the losers play off for seventh and eighth places.
Slovakia had been 3-2 up until the end of the third period when Germany scored to take the game to overtime and ultimately win. Felix Schrader scored all Germany’s goals, in their first win in Paralympic ice hockey since Torino 2006.
German forward Jano Bussmann said he was “very proud” of the result.
“This was not our best game, but we worked so hard to get back to the game,” he said. “The physicality of the Germans won us the game again. It's incredible to win the first game in 20 years. It's a good feeling.”
Slovakian forward Martin Joppa was crestfallen.
"It's hard to find the right words, but after the second period we believed the game was already won, and we started to make naive plays in the offensive zone. We made four big mistakes and they scored four goals from that, and that's it. We had a lot more chances than them, but didn't score."
