Eindhoven 2014: What to watch on day three

Norway’s Sarah Louise Rung, Great Britain’s Eleanor Simmonds and the hosts’ very own Marc Evers and Marlou van der Kulk will all be in action on day three (6 August) at the 2014 IPC Swimming European Championships. 07 Aug 2014

Having won gold in the 100m backstroke with a new world record time, the Netherlands Marc Evers is clearly on form at the Pieter van den Hoogenband Swimming Stadium, his favourite pool.

Having won gold in the 100m backstroke with a new world record time, the Netherlands Marc Evers is clearly on form at the Pieter van den Hoogenband Swimming Stadium, his favourite pool.

He heads into the 100m breaststroke with the fastest personal best out of a high class field of swimmers, but it is Great Britain’s Scott Quin and Russia’s Artem Pavlenko who are closest.

The fifth-placed finisher from the last Europeans in 2011, 24-year-old Quin has bought down his times markedly since then.

Pavlenko is the silver medallist from the London 2012 Paralympic Games.

Women’s 50m butterfly S5

Norway’s Sarah Louise Rung won her first gold medal on day two (5 August) of Eindhoven 2014 in the 100m breaststroke and is defending a total of four European titles including this event.

Belarusian Natalia Shavel and one of Spain’s most famous para-athletes Teresa Perales will line-up alongside Rung.

Perales, returning from injury, already beat Rung to gold in the 100m freestyle on Monday (4 August) and won a European title for Spain in the relay.

Women’s 200m individual medley SM12

This event could be a straight head-to-head between Russia’s multiple world champion Darya Stukalova and Great Britain’s Hannah Russell.

Russell was already victorious in Eindhoven in the 100m backstroke to add to her world title from 2013 in Montreal, Canada, beating Stukalova to the wall.

Men’s 100m freestyle S9

You could barely fit a piece of paper between the personal bests of Hungarian Toth Tamas and Italian Fedrico Morlacchi in this race.

Morlacchi has won a European title over the longer 400m distance whereas Tamas has already been disappointed with an agonising fourth-placed finish in the 50m freestyle.

World champion swimmer Tamas will be looking to make amends on day three of Eindhoven 2014.

Also in action on 6 August will be Great Britain’s Eleanor Simmonds and Oliver Hynd, looking for their second gold medals of the competition in the women’s 50m freestyle S6 and men’s 200m individual medley SM8 respectively.

The Netherlands’ Marlou van der Kulk is also on the hunt for her first gold in the women’s 100m breaststroke SB14 alongside Lisette Teunissen in the women’s 200m freestyle S4.

The 2014 IPC Swimming European Championships continue until 10 August and feature around 380 of the world’s best swimmers from 37 countries.

All morning and evening sessions will be livestreamed at www.ParalympicSport.TV and live results will be available at the Eindhoven 2014 website.

Live updates will be posted to the IPC Swimming Facebook page and the Twitter account or search #Eindhoven2014.
