The sport will make its Parapan American debut at Lima 2019 and Paralympic debut at Tokyo 2020.

Para badminton has been played internationally since the 1990s, with the first World Championships taking place in Amersfoort, Netherlands, in 1998. In 2011, the sport was brought under the governance of the Badminton World Federation.
