FROM PORTUGAL TO CANADA
He was born with dysplasia of the right hip that went unnoticed until he began learning to walk. A doctor in Portugal discovered his condition and he had three operations, which led to him being in a cast from ankles to chest. He developed avascular necrosis when he was four, a condition that causes cellular death in the bone due to the blood supply being interrupted. He reached the point that he could not walk farther than 500m so in 2001, his parents decided to move the family to Toronto, Canada, where he could be treated at the city's children's hospital.
