She took up shot put in 2008 at age 23 in Portlaoise, Ireland.
Why this sport?
She stopped playing sports after losing her vision. Irish Paralympian Garrett Culliton, the disability officer with the Laois Sports Partnership, suggested she try athletics. Initially, she tried tandem cycling, but opted for athletics.

She contracted vasculitis in her brain at age 18 and had an operation to relieve the pressure. On the day of her release she collapsed and was taken back to hospital. Following four brain haemorrhages, she spent time in intensive care and awoke to find she was blind and with no feeling down one side of her body.
