Other information
She says she grew up confident about her impairment, but began to use swimming as an outlet when she became more self-conscious in her teenage years. "I was ashamed of nothing growing up. From the end of elementary school that changed a little. I told myself to make new friends but I was afraid of whether people would like me. People who had hands the same would see a girl with one hand like theirs but not the other. Many people asked to see my hand because I would hide it. I saw the water as a refuge and a revenge. Swimming was the only thing that really made me feel myself. In the water I could not hide and I could not mask myself, the water was a safe haven in which even my disability was not an obstacle."
