He sustained a serious spinal cord injury in 2010 after he was involved in a car accident. Over a two-year period he underwent a number of operations in countries such as Germany, the Czech Republic and the People's Republic of China, which allowed him to regain some sensation in his arms, and he was later able to start using a wheelchair.
