She took up running in 2004 in Ohio after the birth of her third child.

She took up the sport in order to "get out of the house and become more independent".

Impairment
At age 11 she was diagnosed with arteriovenous malformation, which is an abnormal connection between the veins and arteries that causes intense pain and bleeding. RUNNING ALONE
Unlike many visually impaired runners, she always runs solo without a guide, even when it has cost her wins. "I have run right past the finish line before. Once, I was supposed to take a turn and I kept going straight. I was ahead by about a minute, but by the time I figured out where to go, I lost the race." (espn.go.com, 01 Jun 2011)
