He heard about wheelchair racing from ex-patients at Pinderfields Hospital in Wakefield, England. He played football before his accident but wanted to take up an individual sport.

Injuries
In April 2016 he dislocated his hip while racing in the Paris Marathon in France. He returned to competition a month later at the British national championships. (Facebook page, 08 May 2016, 03 Apr 2016)

His wife Jade Jones has represented Great Britain in Para triathlon and wheelchair racing. She won silver at the 2017 World Para Triathlon Championships in Rotterdam, Netherlands, and finished ninth in the T54 800m at the 2016 Paralympic Games in Rio de Janeiro. Impairment
