Sport specific information
When and where did you begin this sport?
He competed in his first half marathon in his early twenties. He took up Para athletics seriously in 2016.
Why this sport?
He took up Para athletics after a successful career in Para triathlon. "I was hopeful that I'd be able to go to the Rio 2016 Paralympics but due to limited spaces for events the International Paralympic Committee [IPC] dropped my classification from the Games. This was quite a blow and having probably reached my peak in Para triathlon, I hunted around for something else to do. In 2016 I took the plunge and signed up for the Valencia Marathon [in Spain]. My target was to come in under three hours and we did that by about three minutes. I was over the moon."
He has represented Great Britain in Para triathlon, and won gold at the 2013 World Championships in London, England. (SportsDeskOnline, 04 May 2020; triathlon.org, 01 Jan 2015)
His children Beth and Charlie have both competed in gymnastics at national junior level. (activenation.org.uk, 21 May 2014)
He has retinitis pigmentosa, a group of genetic conditions that involve a breakdown and loss of cells in the retina. (aop.org.uk, 11 Jan 2019)
