Impairment
In 1990 she sustained herniated discs in her back while serving in the US Army. She coped with the pain for 20 years until an unsuccessful spinal cord operation led to two of the discs collapsing onto her spinal cord in 2010. As a result, she was diagnosed with incomplete paraplegia and cauda equina syndrome [compression of spinal nerves]. She is able to walk, run and ski with the support of crutches.
