He quit football in order to pursue a career in running at age 15. "I quit [football] at about 15. If you want to do well in this sort of sport [athletics], you need to dedicate yourself to it."

He trains with fellow Vale Royal club member John Humphries, who he used to play football with. Humphries was battling injuries around the time of Josh's car accident. "John's injury problems started when I had my accident, so we've both built things back up together."
