She was involved in a boating accident in 2009 at age 16, while she was on holiday in Spring Lake, MI, United States of America. She was riding in a small watercraft with two friends when a larger motorboat collided with them. The propeller of the other boat severed her left leg below the knee and she also received a head injury, which affects her memory. She had nine operations in the weeks that followed. Sadly, her friend died in the crash. In 2012 an eight member jury in the US District Court in Grand Rapids, MI, awarded her USD $4.6 million in damages after finding the driver of the other vessel guilty of negligence.
