He took up the sport in 1992 in Valencia, Spain.
Why this sport?
He chose athletics because he could not play handball due to his vision impairment. He began running alongside his father, who was involved in the sport recreationally. He put aside his sporting career to focus on his physiotherapy studies for a period before returning to the sport.

Other information
He was inspired to start running marathons after watching countryman Martin Fiz, who represented Spain at three consecutive editions of the Olympic Games between 1992 and 2000. In 2018 Garnica ran a half marathon in Seville, Spain, with Fiz as his guide after an initiative by the event's organising committee to put together able-bodied runners and runners with a vision impairment.
