Algeria beat South Africa for men’s wheelchair basketball title

In the third-place game, Egypt defeated Morocco 71-68, while in the fifth-place game Nigeria beat Angola 51-48.

The Algerian men’s national wheelchair basketball team defeated South Africa, 66-56, to take first place at the fourth edition of the IWBF African Men’s Wheelchair Basketball Championships, which were held in Luanda, Angola, last weekend.

Algeria, led by the tournament’s MVP Nabil Guedoun, helped his team go undefeated in the tournament with seven wins to earn a qualification spot at next July’s World Championships in Incheon, South Korea.

The champions outscored their opponents 447-307 during the week, which included the South African team that represented the continent at the London 2012 Paralympic Games.

In the third-place game, Egypt defeated Morocco 71-68, while in the fifth-place game Nigeria beat Angola 51-48.

The five-player all-tournament team included South Africa’s Gift Mooketsi and Luvuyo Mbanda, along with Morocco’s Mohamed Oulini, Abdelilha Gani and Abdelhak El Hadaoui.

The next edition of the African Championships will take place in 2015 in Algeria.
