Australians wrap up successful Sailing World Cup

The next stop on the ISAF Sailing World Cup will be in Miami, Florida in the USA on 25 January. The week-long event will see more North American sailors competing on the water.

The ISAF Sailing World Cup finished its fifth year with the medal races on Sunday (8 December) in Melbourne, Australia.

Australia’s Liesl Tesch and Duncan McGregor took home first in the SKUD18 regatta while Paul Francis won the 2.4mR.

Tesch, who was the 2012 winner, was victorious for the second straight year in the SKUD18 two-person keelboat race.

Even though she was sailing with a new partner – McGregor – for the first time, the pairing came in first place for five of the seven races and finished second and third out of five pairs in the other two races.

They finished with 10 total points and seven net points.

Jovin Tan and Desiree Lim of Singapore finished first in the other two races, putting them second overall for the competition. They finished with 13 total points and 10 net points.

Third place went to Australia’s Amethyst Barnbrook and Brett Pearce who finished with 20 total points and 16 net points.

Paul Francis came first the 2.4mR one-person keelboat race. He won three races while finishing second in the other four races. He finished with 11 total points and nine net points.

Matt Bugg, who was ranked ninth in the world coming into the event, finished second out of the six racers. He came in first for three of the races. He finished the regatta with 18 total points and 10 net points.

Third place went to Michael Leydon who came first in one of the races while finishing third in the majority of the races. He finished the regatta with 22 total points and 17 net points.
