The centre of Baku saw a flash mob like never before thanks to the National Paralympic Committee (NPC) of Azerbaijan, as a way to promote Para sport for children in the country.

More than 100 dancers, both able-bodied and wheelchair, took to the streets of Azerbaijan’s capital city as part of the United Nations’ International Day of Persons with Disabilities on 3 December.

Crowds of onlookers soon gathered as the flash mob danced their way through a medley of hits including songs by Backstreet Boys and Jennifer Lopez.

The event, which was organised together with FlashMob Azerbaijan, also served to promote the country’s third ‘Childrens’ Paralympic Games’, which were held in Sumgait on 11 December.

The competition is the only one of its kind at country level and is supported by UNICEF. More than 100 children from eight regions of Azerbaijan took part, competing in nine different sports. The organisers hope to stage an international version of the competition in 2019.
