IPC mourns the loss of wheelchair fencing Paralympian Michal Dabrowski
Michal Dabrowski won the silver medal in the men's Sabre category B event and bronze in the men's Epée category B event at the Paris 2024 Paralympic Games 15 Nov 2024The International Paralympic Committee (IPC) is saddened to learn of the passing of Paralympian and Polish wheelchair fencer Michal Dabrowski and extends its deepest condolences to his family and friends.
IPC President Andrew Parsons said: “The passing of an athlete is always a tragic moment for the entire sporting community. They inspire us, not only through their performances but through their resilience and determination.
“Our deepest condolences go out to Michal’s family, friends, and teammates. In this difficult time, we stand together, remembering the incredible impact he made both on and off the field.”
Dabrowski took up wheelchair fencing in 2018 when he was encouraged to get involved in the sport by fellow Polish wheelchair fencer Grzegorz Pluta. He competed in both Epée and Sabre category B events.
At the Paris 2024 Paralympic Games, he won the silver medal in the men's Sabre B event and bronze in Epée B. A year earlier, he won bronze in both Epée and Sabre B disciplines at the 2023 World Championships in Italy. He also secured three bronze medals in Foil team, and individual Epée and Sabre categories at the 2022 European Championships in Poland.
Dabrowski was diagnosed with cancer in November 2023 and received treatment in the months leading up to the Paris 2024 Paralympic Games.
The Paralympian was conferred with the Order of Polonia Restituta for his outstanding achievements in sports in November 2024.
