“Thanks everyone, you're all so kind! I've been squealing with excitement about it! So delighted! Never thought we would be in the same news article as Angelina Jolie either, even more surprising is that mum was able to keep this a secret?!?!?!?”

Kelly Gallagher and her guide Charlotte Evans have both been awarded MBEs in the Queen’s birthday honours list after winning Great Britain’s first ever gold medal at a Paralympic Winter Games.

Visually impaired skier Gallagher and guide Evans won gold in the Super-G at March’s Sochi 2014 Paralympic Winter Games.

Gallagher, 29, receives the accolade for “services to sport for people with a visual impairment,” whilst Evans’ is “for services to Paralympic Sport.”

"Without sounding arrogant, I know how much work we put into this and it is really nice to be recognised by people from outside our sport," said Gallagher.

"The coverage we have received means so much to us because it means people have recognised that commitment, and it proves to others that they are capable of achieving great things whatever their goals are in life."

Gallagher later left a message for her many well-wishers on her Facebook page:

“Thanks everyone, you're all so kind! I've been squealing with excitement about it! So delighted! Never thought we would be in the same news article as Angelina Jolie either, even more surprising is that mum was able to keep this a secret?!?!?!?”

Charlotte Evans also took to Twitter after the news was revealed: “So Friday 13th isn't so unlucky after all. I feel so honoured and happy, thanks everyone for all your kind messages #cantstopdancing,” she tweeted.

Gallagher and Evans’ teammate Jade Etherington, a winner of three silver medals and bronze herself in Sochi, was quick to congratulate the pair.

“Congrats @Kellygallagher @CharEvans1 & @TheYarnold on being appointed an MBE on the queens birthday honours! #gold”

Tim Hollingsworth, CEO of the British Paralympic Association, also sent his congratulations: “Just brilliant MBEs for @Kellygallagher @CharEvans1 in Queen's Birthday Honours. @ParalympicsGB 1st ever winter gold medallists. So deserved”

Also in the Queen’s birthday honours list, Jenny Archer, the lifelong coach of Great Britain’s David Weir, also received an MBE.
