“It is the most important tournament of the year because the different teams get to play against others which they do not face quite often.”

A new edition of the Malmo Open will take place from 11-12 February in Sweden, with six top goalball European teams competing.

Germany´s RGC Hansa, Sweden´s FSBU/IFAS and FIFH Malmo, Finland´s Napaja and Old Power, and Portugal´s Sporting CP will face off in a round-robin format. The team with most wins will claim the title.

“It is the most important tournament of the year because the different teams get to play against others which they do not face quite often,” said Peter Bjorkstrand, Director of the Tournament.

The event´s first edition was held in 1995. FIFH Malmo is the most decorated team with nine titles.

“Every time we organise a new edition we try to take it to the next level,” said Bjorkstrand.

“To make goalball continue growing, we need to have more tournaments at different levels and we need to find a way to give more countries the chance to develop the sport. If not, there will be a bigger gap between the top nations and the others.”
