McKeever, Hoesch shine at IPC Nordic Skiing World Cup

Volunteers at the 2012-13 IPC Nordic Skiing World Cup in Cable, Wisconsin, USA worked hard on the cross-country course after very little snowfall on Monday (14 January).

With Russia sending a small team to the event, it allowed other nations to shine.

In the women’s visually impaired race, Germany’s Vivian Hoesch (15:05.3) and guide Florian Schiller won the 5km free technique race. Canada’s Robbi Weldon (15:38.0) was second, whilst teammate Margarita Gorbounova guided by Andrea Bundon (16:17.0) were third.

In the women’s standing events, Russia’s Anna Milenina was the only finisher in the 15km cross-country classical technique (53:32.5) and won the 5km free technique (14:12.1). Japan’s Shoko Ota (14:36.8) came second and her teammate Momoko Dekijima (15:07.4) was third.

Germany’s Anja Wicker (14:17.0) won the women’s sitting 5km cross country. Canada’s Colette Bourgonje (14:29.0) came second and Italy’s Francesca Porcellato (14:35.8) was third. USA’s Tatyana McFadden, a wheelchair racer who won three gold medals and one bronze at London 2012, came fifth in 15:57.8.

Russia’s Nadezda Andreeva, who had finished fourth in the middle distance race, won the 10km race in 31:28.9. Porcellato (32:20.9) moved up to second place and Bourgonje finished third. Wicker did not compete and McFadden came fourth.

In the men’s visually impaired race, Canada’s Brian McKeever (24:03.0), guided by Erik Carleton, stormed ahead into first place in the 10km cross-country free technique. Sweden’s Zebastian Modin (25:47.3) finished second with guide Albin Ackerot, and USA’s Kevin Burton (30:00.8), guided by Ann Beth Chamberlain was third.

McKeever (52:00.2) also won the 20km cross country classical technique. Sweden’s Zebastian Modin (56:40.0) finished second with guide Albin Ackerot, and USA’s Kevin Burton (1:09:28.6), guided by John Farra was third.

Norway excelled in the men’s standing with Nils-Erik Ulset (24:07.9) winning the 10km free technique and Vegard Dahle (54:07.2) the 20km classical technique.

Canada’s Mark Arendz (25:08.9) was just behind Ulset in the shorter race and Dahle (25:09.1) came third.

With top skiers Irek Zaripov and Roman Petushkov of Russia not skiing, their teammate Ramil Ilalutdinov won both men’s sitting events. He now leads the rankings with 360 points. In the 10km he finished in 24:01.7, almost 12 seconds ahead of USA’s Daniel Cnossen (24:13.5). Ilalutdinov’s compatriot Igor Kuznetsov (24:17.3) came third.

Kuznetsov had the edge in the 15km cross-country, finishing in second place (40:52.1) and Cnossen (41:02.6) was pushed down to third place.
