Night of Paralympic Stars in Berlin

Yesterday, around 400 guests gathered at the 'Night of the Stars', the most important social event of the German Paralympic Movement. It was the first time that this event, organized by the German Fundraising Committee for Disability Sport, was held at the ‘Mercedes World’ in Berlin, Germany. 16 Nov 2007 By IPC

Among several well-known personalities from sport, media, politics and television, Dr. Angela Merkel, Chancellor of the Federal Republic of Germany and Patron of the German Fundraising Committee for Disability Sport, also attended the event.

The highlight of the evening was the presentation of different awards. The German Sportsperson of the Year with a Disability Award was given to Cyclist Natalie Simanowski (Female category), Mathias Mesters (Male category, Athletics) and the women’s National Wheelchair Basketball team (Team category).

The German Paralympic Media Awards, which honour extraordinary achievement in the fields of sport and media, were awarded to ‘The Frankfurter Allgemeine Zeitung’ (Print category) and to the German television station ZDF (TV category). Furthermore, RBB (TV category) received the award for their excellent and extensive coverage of the International Paralympic Day 2007 in Berlin.

On the occasion of this event, the German Paralympic Committee also received a charitable donation of Euro 20,000 from Gerda Pleitgen, Chairperson of the German Fundraising Committee for Disability Sport. The money will be used to support the German Youth Camp at the Beijing 2008 Paralympic Games.
