Paralympic Orientation Workshop in Moscow

Yesterday, a delegation from the International Paralympic Committee (IPC) concluded a one-day Paralympic Orientation Workshop with the Sochi 2014 Organizing Committee for the Olympic and Paralympic Winter Games. 28 Mar 2008 By IPC

“During this critical foundation phase for Sochi 2014 we can share some important experience from past Games and set the Paralympic priorities right in discussions with our Russian friends."

The meetings took place in Moscow, Russia, and were preceded by technical meetings on accessibility and venue related topics on 26 March. The Orientation Workshop was attended by IPC CEO Xavier Gonzalez, Paralympic Games Co-ordination Director Arno Wolter, Apostolos Rigas, Head of Paralympic Games Strategic Projects as well as Sochi 2014 CEO Dimitry Chernyshenko, various members of the Supervisory Council and representatives of various partner organizations including Olympstroy, the Russian Olympic Committee, the Russian Paralympic Committee and the Sochi Municipality

The workshop’s objective was to lay solid foundations in the relations with Sochi and to define the Paralympic framework which is particularly important at this early stage. The meeting gave an introduction to the Paralympic Movement, the Games and the Paralympic stakeholders. It also addressed the value of the Paralympic brand, legacy opportunities and aspects of Games Management.

Said Mr. Gonzalez: “During this critical foundation phase for Sochi 2014 we can share some important experience from past Games and set the Paralympic priorities right in discussions with our Russian friends. We have been please to see about the excellent level of attendance including senior executives which shows the importance given to the Paralympics. In addition, Sochi recognizes the opportunity and benefits that the Paralympics can bring in order to set an example and leave a long lasting legacy for the region and Russia”.

Next month, Mr. Gonzalez and IPC Vice-President Miguel Sagarra will also attend the first International Olympic Committee (IOC) Co-ordination Commission in Sochi.
