Semi-finals decided at women’s worlds

Germany remained undefeated in a commanding victory over France to reach the final four, whilst the Netherlands also kept up their 100% record against China.

The semi-finals of the 2014 Women’s World Wheelchair Basketball Championship were decided on Thursday (26 June) at the Mattamy Athletic Centre in Toronto, Canada.

Elsewhere hosts Canada defeated Australia and the USA put Great Britain to the sword to reach the semi-finals.

Germany 70-25 France

Germany was the first to advance with a dominant win over France in day six’s first quarter-final.

The Germans opened the game with a 23-1 run and that’s how the score stood after ten minutes.

France’s slow start was a surprise to Germany’s Marina Mohnen, who had a game-high 18 points on the afternoon.

“We actually, we expected them to be a bit stronger today,” Mohnen said. “It was a surprise that we were leading by 20 points after five minutes.”

France started to rally near the end of the first half but still trailed by 29 come the break.

The domination would continue in the second half and Germany kept on scoring, ending the game shooting 52 per cent from the field to win 70-25.

Canada 63-47 Australia

Canada kept up their pursuit of glory on home soil as they reached the semi-finals with a victory over Australia.

It was an entertaining and exciting first half of action with both teams providing some good chances, but it was Canada that held the advantage after 20 minutes, leading 33-29.

An 18-4 run by the Canadians in the third quarter put a dent into any chance of Australia getting back into the game.

The Netherlands 62-52 China

The Netherlands were pushed all the way, but emerged victorious against China to book their place in the semi-finals and remain undefeated in the tournament.

After a lightening start by the Dutch, China battled back to close the gap to within three after the first quarter. The Netherlands regrouped in the second, extending their lead to 12 at the halfway stage.

China then mounted a resurgence to take a third, but the deficit was still too great for them to overcome and the Dutch held on to claim a 62-52 victory.

USA 53-41 Great Britain

The USA was the final team to book their place in the semi-finals on day six with victory over Great Britain.

USA dominated the flow of play throughout the first half of play and led 27-18 at the break.

Great Britain went on a scoring run to start the third quarter, but not to be outdone, the Americans went on a 7-2 run of their own just a couple minutes later to further extend their lead.

From there, the USA maintained their domination to keep Great Britain at bay and secure a 53-41 point victory.

Elsewhere

Earlier in the day in the two consolation games, Brazil topped Peru 88-8, while Japan defeated Mexico 68-40.

The semi-finals are scheduled for day 7 of competition on Friday (27 June), with

Canada taking on the Netherlands, while Germany face the USA.
