The Future Arena will host the goalball events at September’s Paralympic Games

Turkey men’s team sealed gold at the Malmo Men Intercup, held in Malmo, Sweden, from 5-7 August, following a 10-0 victory over Germany in the final.

This was one of the last major goalball competitions ahead of the Rio 2016 Paralympic Games, set to take place from 7-18 September.

Even though European champions Turkey lost 5-3 to Sweden A in the first match, they quickly bounced back to subsequently defeat Japan 9-4, London 2012 Paralympic champions Finland 11-6, Algeria 10-0, Sweden U 19-13 and Germany 13-4 to qualify for the final against the latter.

Sweden A collected bronze and Japan finished fourth.

Final standings. 1. Turkey; 2. Germany; 3. Sweden A; 4. Japan; 5. Finland; 6. Denmark; 7. Algeria; 8. Sweden U

In addition, the International Blind Sports Federation (IBSA) has released an updated version of the goalball rankings.

Lithuania is now the new men’s top-ranked team in the world, followed by Iran, China, Turkey, current world champions Brazil, Finland, Czech Republic, Slovenia, USA and Ukraine.

In the women’s rankings, China remains on top, ahead of Brazil, Japan, USA, Turkey, Australia, Canada, Guatemala and Israel.

The goalball Paralympic competition will be contested at the Future Arena from 8-16 September.
