“Last time we won two medals from the five athletes who went, which means if we are to take a slightly bigger number then we shall pick more medals.”

The Uganda Paralympic Committee (UPC) recently staged a three-day para-sport gala which attracted over 200 participants who took part in 19 different para-sports at Kyambogo University, Makerere University and Miami Beach at Luzira.

The aim of the event was to recruit new athletes ahead of next year’s All Africa Games in Brazzaville, Congo.

The National Council of Sports (NCS) wants to field a greater number of para-athletes at the 2015 event, having only sent five athletes at the last edition.

Jasper Aligawesa, NCS General Secretary, pledged to sponsor a bigger number of athletes next year.

“Last time we won two medals from the five athletes who went, which means if we are to take a slightly bigger number then we shall pick more medals.”

He added that NCS will, on top of advocating for an increase in participants, also contribute towards the team’s training ahead of the All Africa Games which is also a qualifier to the Rio 2016 Paralympic Games in Brazil.
