PARA PENTATHLON
The ultimate multi-discipline Para sport with five unique challenges testing physical and mental skills.
ABOUT PARA PENTATHLON
Classification consists of seven sport classes ranging across physical, intellectual and visual impairments. Para pentathletes compete in a one-day competition format. They complete the Para swimming (fastest time), Para fencing (most hits on their opponents) and obstacle (fastest time) disciplines to gain a total of pentathlon points going into the final combined discipline, the Para laser run (or push if they are a wheelchair user).
The athlete with the most points starts the laser run first, and every point behind the leader equates to one additional second for the others. Positions can change frequently and dramatically through the shoot and run/push segments with the first athlete over the line becoming the champion. The five disciplines comprise swimming (100m), fencing (épée as chosen weapon), obstacle race (70m-80m over specified obstacles) and laser run (four circuits of a laser shoot and 300m run – or push for wheelchair users).
PARA PENTATHLON HISTORY
Para pentathlon strengthens the complete athlete narrative and, after a series of test and demonstration events worldwide, was formally introduced with the first World Championship Para laser run event in Lisbon, Portugal in 2022. Since then, popularity has grown along with the number of disciplines, and Para tetrathlon (swim, obstacle, laser run) debuted alongside the able-bodied U19 pentathlon during the UIPM 2025 World Championships in Druskininkai, Lithuania.
Did you know ?
Para pentathlon athletes rely on a laser pistol during the Para laser run. In this case, the firearms use lasers rather than air-fired pellets.
