He began athletics after his mother took him and his siblings to the local track. He began training at age eight. "I kept turning up to training and working hard and it came to a point where I was getting greater and greater."

He has spoken about the importance of independence in his life. "The most vital year was last year [2018] when I gained independence and when I knew my own pace, knew how I could move. That year I didn't train with any group; I trained by myself. I used to run around in the park on my own, on the road on my own. That was the most successful year in my life in terms of sport and life in general. When sport works out it seems to bring everything with it. I'm proud that I gained independence. Success comes naturally and independence is key. My mother taught me how to be independent and without independence I'd probably suffer more." (SportsAidUK YouTube channel, 02 Aug 2019)
