When and where did you begin this sport?
She took up running at age 41.
Why this sport?
She competed in cycling before her vision deteriorated in her twenties, resulting in her stopping doing sport. On her 41st birthday she realised she could not walk up stairs without losing her breath as she weighed 300 pounds. She began running with the aim of losing weight and as a part of a programme to promote literacy.

BIOGRAPHY
She has written three books including her biography 'The Great Elephant Ride', which charts her life as a transgender person [she was born Steven Timmer], growing up in a religious and conservative family, serving with the United States Marine Corps and overcoming the obstacles of a visual impairment, which led to her discharge from the Marines.
