Wheelchair Basketball - Women's - GER versus USA - London 2012 Paralympic Game

54 GER vs USA 48

LONDON, August 31
Marina MOHNEN (GER) scored seven of her game-high 15 points in the last two minutes of play to help Germany beat USA 54-48 on Friday in a rematch of the women's wheelchair gold medal finalists at the Beijing 2008 Paralympic Games.
The Germans were protecting a one-point lead when captain MOHNEN scored from close in for a three-point cushion. After the USA closed to within two points of a tie with 37 seconds to play, MOHNEN sealed the win with a layup and two foul shots to close out the scoring. Coincidentally she began the scoring with a field goal 26 seconds after the opening tipoff.
Annika ZEYEN (GER) also had a big game for the Germans and finished with 11 points, while Natalie SCHNEIDER (USA) and Desi MILLER (USA) led their side with 12 points each.
There were eight lead changes and the game at the Basketball Arena was tied twice.
With the USA ahead 36-33 at the start of the fourth quarter, Edina MUELLER (GER) brought the Germans within one of a tied game and that was quickly followed by a basket by Gesche SCHUENEMANN (GER) to help Germany to a one-point lead. The USA took the lead again on a basket by SCHNEIDER but successive shots from SCHUENEMANN and MOHNEN helped secure a three-point lead.
MOHNEN scored a field goal with 37 seconds left in the game and was fouled while trying to score again with 10 seconds left. She converted the free throws to round out the scoring and secured Germany's first win of the London 2012 Paralympic Games.
