He took up the sport at age 20 in Petropavl, Kazakhstan.
Why this sport?
He was involved in martial arts before he lost his leg. Following his amputation, the Kazakhstan Mixed Martial Arts Federation sent him to the National Paralympic Committee of Kazakhstan, where he chose to take up Para cross-country skiing.
