Former Formula 1 driver wins gold on Brands Hatch

Alex Zanardi was a star Formula 1 driver when he lost his legs in a 2001 crash. On 5 September 2012 - 21 years after he last raced in Formula 3000 at the same venue, Brands Hatch - Zanardi won a gold medal the Paralympic Games. The Italian beat Germany's Nobert Mosandl by more than 27 seconds to win the men's handcycle time trial.

The image of Zanardi sitting on the finish line, with his carbon-fiber racing bike in one hand and making a triumphant fist with the other, quickly became one of the most iconic images of the Games.
