Algerian men’s and women’s goalball teams left victorious from Sharm El Sheikh, Egypt, where they successfully defended the International Blind Sports Federation (IBSA) African Championships on 24 October.

Both teams rounded off a perfect tournament without losing a single match. The gold medal-matches were a repeat from the 2016 edition’s finals as again Algeria faced Egypt.

In the women’s final, Algeria’s Beheta Benallou had a glittering performance, scoring 10 goals to help her team beat the hosts 12-2. The home crowd’s support could not prevent Egypt from losing the men’s final as well 10-1. Samir Bellabouchet scored all the winning-team goals.

Thanks to their performances, the Algerian and Egyptian men’s and women’s teams secured spots at the 2018 IBSA World Championships in Malmo, Sweden, from 3-9 June.

Men’s standings: 1. Algeria; 2. Egypt; 3. Morocco; 4. Rwanda; 5. Kenya

Women’s standings: 1. Algeria; 2. Egypt; 3. Morocco
