This Saturday (26 July), 150 of Europe’s best para-archers from 25 countries will begin their quest for gold at the 2014 Para-Archery European Championships in Nottwil, Switzerland.

Ahead of the first day of competition, IPC writer Billie Marshall has picked out eight para-archers to keep an eye out for:

David Drahoninsky (CZE) – men’s compound W1

“The current world number one claimed a bronze medal at last year’s World Championships in Bangkok and a silver at London 2012. He is tipped to go one better in Switzerland.”

John Stubbs (GBR) – men’s compound open

“The Brit is the current men’s compound open World Champion and is bidding to complete the historic double. There is every chance of it happening.”

Zandra Reppe (SWE) – women’s compound open

“A consistent top 10 finisher going back to the 2009 World Championships in South Korea. She is aiming for her first medal at a major event.”

Maik Szarszewski (GER) – men’s recurve open

“The German has three consecutive 9th placed finishes in the past two Paralympics and World Championship events and will be thereabouts again this year.”

Roman Chayka (UKR) – men’s recurve open

“Finished just outside the podium places at the 2013 World Championships in Bangkok and the London 2012 Paralympic Games. He will be determined to change that in Nottwil.”

Hatice Bayar (TUR) – women’s recurve open

“Currently a career high of 4th in the world rankings and also finished in 4th place at the World Championships. Will be hoping to medal.”

Magali Comte (SUI) – women’s recurve open

“Had an inconsistent last two years but with home support can surprise many following her 17th placed finish at last year’s World Championships last year.”

Martin Imboden (SUI) – men’s compound open

“Martin comes into the event having shot a world record score at an event in Basel and with home support a factor, he could be the one to beat.”
