Sport specific information

When and where did you begin this sport?
She first tried a sit-ski in 2011, just two months after her accident.
Why this sport?
"Skiing was the thing that turned my recovery around. I went skiing for the first time two months after the loss of my legs. My mom was complaining about me always in the house, and so she told me you need to do something with your life because you're driving me nuts. I thought I'd go skiing a couple times a year. But I did one run down and thought, 'Where can I buy this equipment and make it part of my life?'"

She arrives at the start line early so that she can listen to music and dance. "I have a pre-race playlist for every event, my slalom songs are very different from my super G songs. I prop my ski rig up on my outriggers, so my arms are free, and I dance to the music." (discovernac.org, 2016)
Sporting philosophy / motto
"When I'm skiing, I'm able-bodied again. When I'm in my sit-ski, I'm whole. The fact that I don't have legs doesn't mean anything on the ski hill." (tetongravity.com, 21 Apr 2016)

Impairment
In September 2011 she attempted to jump onto a moving train but slipped and fell under it, crushing her legs in the process. She lost nearly all of her left leg and her right leg above the knee. "It was a surreal moment. I saw my legs getting crushed, the train going over my legs. For a long time I would have nightmares of a red background with white splinters. I remember thinking, 'What have I done?' I felt my femur snap. I remember thinking I was going to die." (deseretnews.com, 27 Oct 2012)
