He began throwing the javelin at Pomona College in Claremont, CA, United States.
Why this sport?
An athlete before his motorcycle accident, he had always regretted not trying to make the US Olympic team so he began to train for the 2012 Paralympic Games in London.

General interest

Injuries
In 2012 he fell on his bathroom floor the night before an athletics meeting at the University of California after removing his prosthesis. An x-ray revealed he had broken his tibia, although it did not prevent him from competing the next day. (menshealth.com, 04 Jun 2012)

Impairment
In 2007 he was involved in a motorcycle accident which resulted in a collapsed lung, a hurt kidney, a broken shoulder and ribs, and damaged eye sockets and cheekbones. He also severely damaged his left leg, which was amputated below the knee in 2009, although he has kept the skeletal remains as a trophy. "If I wanted to be an athlete again then I had to cut the leg off because life with a salvaged limb is no life for me." He has also made a short film called 'Thrown' about his experience.
