He began competing in biathlon and cross country skiing in 2005. Prior to skiing, he competed in swimming at multiple Paralympic Games.

He says he began cross country skiing "somewhat by accident." After many years away from elite sport due to his medical career, he began searching for a hand bike to get back into high physical activity. He met [French cross country skiing icon] Claude Terraz, who suggested he try cross country skiing.

He contracted polio at three months old, resulting in the loss of use of his legs. As a young child he first got into sports through swimming as part of a rehabilitation programme. (, 12 Jun 2009)
Other information
After competing at the 1984 Paralympic Games in Stoke-Mandeville, England, he took time off from elite sport. The large amount of time required to train for elite sports, coupled with the dedication required for medical studies - and later specialist surgery training - were the reasons for the break. He returned to elite competition in 2005 with biathlon and cross country skiing. (, 03 Mar 2010)
