Sport specific information

When and where did you begin this sport?
He took up snowboarding in 2005.
Why this sport?
"I did [ice hockey] a little bit, for a couple more years. After a while, though, I had normal teenager stuff getting in the way of it, a job and social stuff. The reality was that I wasn't going to make the NHL, and I started to transition away from it. That's when I got really into snowboarding. It was something I could do on my own terms, and it brought me a lot of freedom in my teenage years. I was able to keep my competitive side healthy by racing; I did pretty well with some wins around Ontario. It became my passion really quickly."

While training for his junior ice hockey team at age 10, he discovered a bump on his left leg. An x-ray revealed that he had a cancerous tumour. Three months of chemotherapy followed before he underwent a below-knee amputation and a Van Ness rotation. This procedure involves turning the ankle joint 180 degrees so it can be used to replace the knee. He was walking with a prosthesis by April 2004. (dulifestyle.com, 25 Oct 2012)
