Germany’s Anja Wicker has been selected as January’s Allianz Athlete of the Month following her impressive performance at the World Para Nordic Skiing World Cup on home snow.

The sit-skier defeated last season’s overall Crystal Globe winner Kendall Gretsch and her fellow USA teammate Oksana Masters, to win the biathlon sprint in Altenberg.

Wicker received 54 per cent of the public votes. Japan’s wheelchair tennis player Shingo Kunieda was second with 16 per cent, followed by Canadian judoka Michelle Jorgensen with 12 per cent. Canadian cyclist Kate O’Brien and Chinese alpine skier Zhang Mengqui were also on the shortlist.

The nominations are compiled from submissions by National Paralympic Committees (NPCs) and International Federations (IFs).
