APC President praises "best ever Parapan American Games"

"You have opened our eyes, transforming impossibility into a life full of possibility. You have shown that together we are one."

Athletes, officials, distinguished guests, the great people of Toronto, good evening.

Welcome to the Closing Ceremony of the biggest ever Parapan American Games.

Over the last eight days more than 1,600 incredible para-athletes have redefined how we look at sport. You have entertained us with your high level performances and shown that life is about maximising ability and not perceived disability.

You have opened our eyes, transforming impossibility into a life full of possibility. You have shown that together we are one.

Your record breaking performances speak for themselves. You are getting faster, stronger and more agile by the day. Your future is extremely bright and all roads now lead to Rio 2016 and South America’s first Paralympic Games.

Here in Toronto, we have seen a growing depth of talent across all sports and athletes from the Youth Games come of age. I would like to thank all 28 competing nations, as well as the international federations, for developing these superhuman athletes. They have inspired and excited us all and I am certain athletes of the Americas will enjoy more medal success than ever before at Rio 2016.

These Games have been watched by millions across this continent and I would like to congratulate CBC for the fantastic pictures they have created.

Thank you to the Toronto 2015 Organising Committee led by Saad Rafi. You have raised the bar for future organisers and I have to say these have been the best Parapan American Games ever.

Together with the City of Toronto, Government of Ontario and Government of Canada, you have done an outstanding job in growing awareness of para-sport in this country.

Thank you to the officials, classifiers and APC and IPC staff for overseeing hundreds of hours of sport, and thank you to the giant orange army of volunteers. Your warm smiles have shone as brightly as the orange shirts you wear. You have helped make these Games hugely enjoyable for us all. Thank you to all the volunteers.

I would like to leave with you with a quote from the “Paralympic Pele”, Brazilian 5-side-footballer and Toronto 2015 gold medallist Jefinho which sums up the effect of these Games.

“When you see para-sport, you do not see disability, you see real talent.”

I’m delighted that at Toronto 2015 we have seen more talent than ever before.

Finally the time has come for me to declare the Toronto 2015 Parapan American Games closed and I call upon para-athletes from all over the Americas to meet again in Lima, Peru in four years’ time, where once again, you will inspire and excite the world with your sporting excellence. See you in Lima in 2019.

Discurso de la Ceremonia de Clausura Toronto 2015

Atletas, oficiales, apreciados invitados, formidable pueblo de Toronto, buenas tardes. Bienvenidos a la ceremonia de clausura de los mayores Juegos Parapanamericanos de la historia.

Durante los últimos ocho días, más de 1600 asombrosos paradeportistas han redefinido la forma con la que vemos el deporte. Nos han ofrecido grandes actuaciones con su alto nivel de rendimiento y nos han mostrado que, en la vida, se trata de potenciar al máximo las capacidades en vez de fijarse en la discapacidad.

Nos han abierto los ojos, transformando lo imposible en una vida llena de oportunidades. Nos han mostrado que, juntos, somos más.

Sus actuaciones, que han batido récords mundiales, hablan por sí solas. Cada día que pasa son más rápidos, más fuertes y más ágiles. Su futuro brilla con intensidad y ahora todos los caminos llevan a Río 2016 y a los primeros Juegos Paralímpicos de América del Sur.

Aquí, en Toronto, hemos visto madurar poco a poco el talento excepcional en todos los deportes y atletas de los Juegos Juveniles. Quisiera agradecer a las 28 naciones que han competido, así como a las federaciones internacionales, por ayudar a desarrollar estos atletas sublimes. Nos han inspirado y emocionado a todos, y estoy seguro de que los atletas de las Américas se llevarán más éxitos de medalla que nunca en Río 2016.

Millones de personas en todo el continente han visto estos Juegos y quisiera dar las gracias a CBC/Radio-Canada por las fantásticas imágenes que han creado.

Gracias al Comité Organizador de TORONTO 2015, liderado por Saäd Rafi. Ustedes han elevado el nivel para futuros organizadores y tengo que decir que estos han sido los mejores Juegos Parapanamericanos de la historia.

Ustedes, junto con la Ciudad de Toronto, el Gobierno de Ontario y el Gobierno de Canadá, han realizado un trabajo formidable para aumentar la sensibilidad sobre el paradeporte en este país.

Mi agradecimiento a los oficiales, clasificadores y al personal del APC y del IPC por haber supervisado cientos de horas de deporte, y gracias también al colosal ejército naranja de voluntarios. Sus cálidas sonrisas han brillado tanto como las camisetas anaranjadas que llevan puestas. Han ayudado a hacer estos Juegos enormemente agradables para todos nosotros. Gracias a todos los voluntarios.

Quisiera dejarles con una cita del “Pelé paralímpico” del fútbol 5 y medallista de oro de Toronto 2015, el brasileño Jefinho, que resume los efectos de estos Juegos: “Cuando uno mira el paradeporte, uno no ve las discapacidades, lo que ve es auténtico talento”.

Estoy encantado de que en Toronto 2015 hayamos visto más talento que nunca.

Finalmente, ha llegado el momento de declarar cerrados los Juegos Parapanamericanos Toronto 2015 y hago un llamamiento a los paradeportistas de todas las Américas para volver a encontrarse en Lima (Perú) dentro de cuatro años donde, nuevamente, inspirarán y emocionarán al mundo con su excelencia deportiva. ¡Hasta la próxima en Lima 2019!
