"They were incredible in Mannheim, and it was a privilege to be riding with such talented riders competitors and quality horses. The competition was close, although in the end, Paris came through for me."

Host nation Germany took the first ever Nations Cup title at the annual Mannheim May-Market Horse Show, which took place from 2-6 May. The event, which has run since 2003, always features a strong para-equestrian dressage lineup, but this was the first year a team competition has been held.

With a score of 434.143 points, the German team of Elke Philipps on Regaliz (Grade Ia), Dr. Angelika Trabert on Ariva Avanti (Grade II), Hannelore Brenner on Kawango (Grade III) and Lena Weifenon Don Turner (Grade IV) beat Denmark, which finished in second place with 418.18, and the Netherlands, which finished in third with 415.356.

There was plenty of success too for home riders in their individual competitions.

Brenner took both individual Grade III titles (with 73.596% and 79.917%) and said: “I guess we were very well lined up against Denmark and I feel very positive about the Alltech FEI World Equestrian Games this summer.”

Teammates Phillips took the Grade Ia individual title with a score of 77.667%, while Nora Kristina Hamann on Don Bolero took the Grade Ib individual title with 71.333%.

Denmark’s Stinna Tange Kaastrup won the Grade Ib freestyle on Steffi Graf with a score of 73.750%.

In Grade II, Trabert took the individual prize with 73.676% and there was success again for the Canadian team after their strong showing at the competition in Deauville, France, the week before when Lauren Barwick and Off to Paris took Grade II freestyle title with 77.167%.

Barwick said: "They were incredible in Mannheim, and it was a privilege to be riding with such talented riders competitors and quality horses. The competition was close, although in the end, Paris came through for me."

Belgium’s Michele George, on FBW Rainman, was victorious in both Grade IV categories taking the individual test with 77.262% and the freestyle with 77.917%.
