“The website will allow people with disabilities to master, discover, explore and perceive their sporting environment independently from the tender age through their athlete pathway and to their time of retirement.”

The International Paralympic Committee (IPC) launched the first official website of the Zimbabwe National Paralympic Committee (ZNPC) on Friday (18 May) at www.zimparalympic.org.

The new website incorporates everything surrounding the Paralympic Movement in Zimbabwe, from the elite-level athletes taking part in the Paralympic Games and All-Africa Games to development at the grassroots level.

It contains news, features, images and videos, as well as information relating to anti-doping, classification and the Paralympic Games.

Michael Blagango, ZNPC President, said: “One of the primary purposes of a sports movement is to serve as a vehicle for collective action on gathering of information, packaging and dissemination of information on behalf of sporting people with disabilities in that particular country.

“The assistance given by the IPC in developing the ZNPC website is a welcome gesture by all sporting people with disabilities in Zimbabwe, as it entails that all information and sports related issues will be found under one roof.”

The website launch is part of the IPC’s overall digital strategy to develop a greater online presence for its members over the coming years, and this is the second of many websites the IPC is developing this year.

Craig Spence, IPC Director of Media and Communications, said: “This is a great opportunity to help our National Paralympic Committees by providing them with the resources to help propel the Paralympic Movement forward in their respective countries.

“With the success of the Oceania Paralympic Committee website launch last month, Zimbabwe’s new online Paralympic hub is bound to receive just as great of a response.”

Blagango said he hopes the new website will create both a sports and social forum for people with disabilities to interact with society in Zimbabwe, as well as enhance networking with other sports organizations around the world to help inspire and influence an innovation in sports for people with disabilities.

Blagango said: “The website will allow people with disabilities to master, discover, explore and perceive their sporting environment independently from the tender age through their athlete pathway and to their time of retirement.

“This advanced and accessible technology will provide critical information that will educate and encourage people with disabilities to get involved in sports and even pursue sporting careers.”

The ZNPC was formed on 7 August 2010 and is affiliated with six different umbrella associations that govern sports for disability groups throughout Zimbabwe.
