The International Paralympic Committee (IPC) is deeply saddened by the death of Lavinia Finehepaea, Tonga National Paralympic Committee first President and pioneer for Paralympic sports in her country, battling cancer on Wednesday (26 February 2020) at her home surrounded by her family and friends.

IPC President Andrew Parsons said: "It was with a great sense of loss that I read the news that Lavinia Finehepaea had passed away. However, it is with some comfort to know that it was while being surrounded by family and friends.

"There is no doubt in my mind that the legacy and impact of her work with the Paralympic Movement will live on in all generations to come.

"Lavinia will be sorely missed and the thoughts of everyone at the IPC go out to the NPC, her family, friends and loved ones at this difficult time."
