The International Paralympic Committee (IPC) set up an Anti-Doping Outreach Booth at the 2012 FAZZA International Powerlifting Competition, held in Dubai, United Arab Emirates from 20-27 February.

IPC Anti-Doping Manager, Vanessa Webb, was on site to promote a healthy and fair sport and give a presentation at the Technical Meeting to remind participants of the IPC Anti-Doping rules, which conform to the World Anti-Doping Code.

“We wanted to answer questions that are frequently asked and give athletes must-have information in the run-up to the London 2012 Paralympic Games,” said Webb.

“We planned the outreach programme to coincide with the last London 2012 qualification event in Powerlifting, in order to maximize the reach of the project.”

In particular, Webb gave information about Athlete Whereabouts, Therapeutic Use Exemptions, general Anti-Doping Information and the 2012 Prohibited List.

Athlete Whereabouts refers to the Anti-Doping Rule that requires athlete to submit information related to their whereabouts, to enable out-of-competition testing.

Athletes were also informed about the application process for Therapeutic Use Exemptions, regarding substances on the prohibited list which are prescribed by a physician.

The IPC Outreach Booth was a success, with an estimated 200 athletes, coaches and support personnel visiting the stand throughout the course of the event.

“The athletes, coaches and support staff were engaged and had many questions. Education and awareness is key to any Anti-Doping programme. With the London Paralympics fast approaching, the IPC wanted to ensure that an open dialogue was had and that the Anti-Doping rules were reinforced with individuals involved with the sport of IPC Powerlifting,” said Webb.

“We look forward to continuing this dialogue with the athletes, coaches and support staff”.
